In Defense of the BCS (A Crap School Perspective)

OSU-LSU. I don't know if they are the two best teams. You don't. Your Powerbook doesn't know either. Chris Fowler doesn't know. But, you can bet your A I'll be watching. And so will you. What the hell else do you have to do on January 7? That's what I thought.

Would it have been more fun/intriguing/noteworthy if somebody had grown a pair and picked Hawaii for the title game? Yes. Do KU, Georgia, and Oklahoma have legitimate gripes? Yes. Am I tired of hearing people complain about the BCS. Y.E.S. Do I have a borderline inappropriate man crush on Chase Budinger? You betcha.

But if there was a playoff Stoops would need to pack up (maybe he should anyway) and Livengood would shut down the program. UA would very, very rarely, if ever, sniff an 8 team playoff. The BCS and the Bowl System is the only way UA can ever be/feel successful, let alone try to make some of their own money and stop suckling from bball's teat.

It's that simple, no BCS, no bowls ever for UA and similar, once in a decade football success schools. And I don't want to hear that even if we have a playoff the lower tier bowls will survive. They won't. Micron, Chik-Fil-A, and Bob's Shop 'o' Porn are not gonna pony up to sponsor a bowl in Idaho featuring Florida Atlantic and Tulsa when a 3 weekend playoff is eating up the ratings and revenue.

Mediocre schools need the bowl system. If Stoops could have finally put a capper on his annual "do-just-enough-late-in-the-season-to-save-my-job" upset tour I would be booking my ticket to Bob's Shop 'o' Porn Bowl in Des Moines right now. Though that was clearly a pipe dream, it would not even be possible if there was a playoff system.

UPDATE: TMQ has a pretty similar take on the BCS, only worded much better. I swear I posted before he did though! (ESPN Page 2 Easterbrook)
